Rebar is the single biggest cost item in reinforced-concrete work, so the first question is always: what does rebar cost per length today? Because it’s sold by the kg and prices track the market, the exact figure moves. This article explains what drives the rebar price so you can buy with confidence.
What determines the rebar price?
- Diameter & weight. Rebar is sold by the kg, so a larger diameter is heavier and costs more per length. See the SNI 2052 rebar weight table for the kg/m of each size.
- Plain vs deformed. Deformed bar (BjTS) usually differs slightly in price from plain bar (BjTP) depending on grade and market demand.
- SNI grade. Grades such as BjTS 420B, 520, or 550 affect the price; higher yield strength generally costs more.
- Mill price & market swings. Steel billet prices move with global prices and the exchange rate — the main reason prices change.
- Volume & delivery. Buying per tonne / per project is cheaper per kg; freight adds to the total.
Watch out: under-spec (“banci”) bar
The market is full of under-spec rebar — diameter below nominal (e.g. labelled 10 mm but actually 9.2 mm) and uncertified. It looks cheap, but each length weighs less and its strength does not meet structural standards. For structural work, always use fully SNI 2052-certified bar and compare price per kg, not per length.
How to get the best rebar price
- Ask for a written quote with clear diameter, type (plain/deformed), and SNI grade.
- Confirm full SNI with a mill certificate.
- Compare per kg, and ask about ready stock.
