Steel Pipe Size & Weight Table: Light, Medium, Heavy (½"–8")

Steel pipe is used for water lines, frames, posts, fences, and industrial installations. When ordering, two things matter most: the size (diameter & wall thickness) and the weight per metre — because pipe is sold by the kilogram. This article summarises the full ERW steel pipe table across Light, Medium, and Heavy classes.

Understanding pipe sizes: inch, nominal, and OD

Pipe is described by three numbers that often cause confusion:

  • Inch / nominal (e.g. 1”, DN25) — the size name, not the real diameter.
  • OD (Outside Diameter) — the actual outer diameter in mm.
  • Wall thickness — defines the class: thicker wall, stronger and heavier pipe.

ERW (Electric Resistance Welded) pipe comes in three thickness classes: Light, Medium, and Heavy, following SNI 0039:2013 / ASTM A53.

ERW steel pipe weight table (kg/m)

InchOD (mm)LightMediumHeavy
½”21.30.9471.211.44
¾”26.81.381.561.87
1”33.71.982.412.94
1¼”42.42.543.103.80
1½”48.33.233.564.38
2”60.34.085.036.19
2½”76.15.716.427.93
3”88.96.728.3610.3
4”114.39.7512.215.99
5”139.716.621.92
6”168.319.828.22
8”219.133.3242.65

The kg/m figures already account for each class’s OD and wall thickness. The standard pipe length is 6 m — multiply kg/m by 6 for the weight per length.

Example: a 2” Medium pipe = 5.03 kg/m × 6 m = 30.2 kg per length.

ERW vs seamless pipe (SCH 40/80)

Besides ERW (welded), seamless pipe is also available in schedules SCH 40, SCH 80, and SCH 160 for high-pressure use — common in oil & gas and industrial projects. The full SCH tables are on our pipe product page.
