Choosing the right steel determines a project’s strength, cost, and speed. Many steel profiles look similar but serve different purposes. This guide summarises the most common types of construction steel in Indonesia and their uses, so you can choose correctly.
Main structural profiles (columns & beams)
- WF (Wide Flange) — an “H” profile with wide flanges, the most common for beams and columns. Efficient against bending. See the WF weight table and uses of WF beams.
- H-Beam — a more square section (height ≈ width), for heavy-load columns. See WF vs H-beam.
- UNP (U-channel) — a U-shaped channel for beams, frames, and machine bases.
- CNP (C-channel) — a C-channel for roof purlins and light wall framing.
Framing & connection profiles
- Angle Bar (besi siku) — an L profile for frames, brackets, stairs, and towers.

Concrete reinforcement

- PC Bar — high-tensile steel wire for prestressed concrete.
Plate & sheet
- Steel Plate — plain plate for base plates, tanks, and fabrication.
- Checkered Plate — anti-slip patterned plate for stairs and flooring.
- HRC and CRC — hot- and cold-rolled steel coil as raw material for fabrication.
How to choose the right steel
- Define the function — structural loads (WF/H-beam), light framing (hollow/CNP), or concrete reinforcement (rebar/wiremesh).
- Check grade & SNI — make sure the profile is full-SNI certified, not under-spec (“banci”).
- Compare per kg — steel is sold by the kg, so compare price per kg, not per length.
